Clinton's varsity boy's basketball team won an overtime thriller against Syracuse Academy of Science 66-65 on Feb. 19, a sectional quarterfinal game, when Malaquias Canery's floater from the lane dropped with just over a second left to play in the extra period.
The Clinton student section flooded the court in celebration as time expired, but controversy over clock management by the refs soon ended the celebration, as fans from the visiting team pleaded for one final possession for their team. No extra time was given and Clinton walked away with the one point win.
Canery finished the game with 24 points, eight in overtime and six-for-six from the free-throw line in the extra period, while Mike Hayduk scored 22 and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The #3 seed Clinton plays Feb. 24 at Onondaga Community College against #2 Westhill at noon or 2 p.m.
