Missing Clinton man found dead

Kirkland Police said the body of a man fitting the description of 65-year-old John J. Bruce, who went missing from his 3014 Fountain Street home in Clinton on Oct. 16. was found in a gully on a hillside in the Town of Marshall on Nov. 11.

The body was discovered following an intensive two-day search by Kirkland Police and the New York Federation of Search and Rescue teams leading K-9 dogs.

Chief Daniel J. English said the body was in a small gully behind a house in Marshall just over the Kirkland line and south of the home and apartment where Bruce had lived.

English described the area as dense brush, bushes, and heavy undergrowth near a swamp, with a stream flowing from the old quarry near Maxwell Road north towards Kirkland. He said the tracker dogs picked up a positive scent that led them to the body.

English said the Oneida County Sheriff's Department was called in because the body is outside Kirkland's jurisdiction. The Clinton Fire Department used it rope and rescue gear to retrieve the body from the gully and the remains were taken to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

English said out-of-state family members were being notified. "Finding John J. Bruce will give the family the needed closure to move forward," English said.
