Highlights from the March 20 issue

Members of the Clinton Fire Department work to extinguish a house fire at the Zimbler residence at 2876 Lumbard Road, Clinton, on March 18. The fire started around 8 a.m. All of the residents who were at the home when the fire started made it out safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Six retire, staffing cuts on the way for CCS

Tony Adamo is the new Postmaster for the Clinton Post Office after Robert Edgar retired from the position in June of 2012. Multiple interim Postmasters have filled the position since then. Adamo’s first day on the job was March 13. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Click here to download

Bette L. Clifford, 90

Bette L. Clifford, 90, a resident of The Lutheran Homes, formerly of Clinton, died on March 12, 2013 at the nursing home.
She was born in Wolcott, N.Y. on August 11, 1922, to Burdette and Adeline (Van Houten) Kline.  She was raised and educated in Wolcott, graduating from Leuvenworth schools.
On September 4, 1943, she married John James Clifford in St. Mary Magdalene Church in Wolcott. In 1949, they moved to Clinton.  Her husband passed away in 1958. She worked for 12 years with the Clinton answering service.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Ann Lester, Binghamton; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Kathleen Clifford, NE, John J. Clifford, Fla., Donald Clifford, Va.; a son-in-law, Billy Roberson, Utica; seven grandchildren, Sean (and Marion) Clifford, New York Mills, Jason (and Kristy) Clifford, New York Mills, Courtney Clifford, NE, Colin Clifford, NE, Lacy Lester, Binghamton, Allysen Lester, Binghamton, and Adam Peterson, Pa.  She is predeceased by a son, Paul Clifford in 1985, and a daughter, Ellen Roberson in 2005.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 9:30 am at St. Mary's Church in Clinton where her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.  Interment will take place privately in St. Mary's Parish Cemetery.  There are no calling hours.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Heintz Funeral Home, 10 East Park Row, Clinton.  Those wishing may donate to a charity of your choice in Bette's memory.
